A group of local Baltimoreans, led by Drs. Ali and Jonathan Furrs, have combined their love for running and the beach, and are running 63 miles, relay style, from Cambridge, Maryland through Ocean City to Bethany Beach on Thursday, August 13, 2026. They will run in pairs/3s for 5 miles per leg for a total of 12 legs to "reach the beach." For the seventh year running, the Reach the Beach Team is raising money to support the UMB CURE Scholars program.
The UMB CURE Scholars Program is a groundbreaking science pipeline program that prepares sixth- to 12th-grade students in West Baltimore for health care and research careers through hands-on workshops, lab experiences, and mentorship. UMB's middle school scholars are the youngest ever to participate in the National Cancer Institute's Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) national program. Support from individuals and companies will enable the program to help our talented CURE Scholars become the diverse biomedical workforce Baltimore needs. We could not be more proud of these scholars, or more grateful for your generous support.
